Actor Casting Headshots in Montreal
I’m back!
After taking some time away from photography for maternity leave, I’ve recently returned to the studio.
And one of the first things I’ve been photographing is actor casting headshots in Montreal.
It feels like a pretty perfect way to come back to work. Actor headshots are the kind of portraits that I’ve always loved making because there is so much room for collaboration, experimentation and personality.
A casting headshot has a very specific job.
It needs to look like you.
But it also needs to make someone curious about you.
What makes a good actor headshot?
An actor headshot isn't really about looking “good” in the traditional sense.
It's about being believable.
If a casting director is looking through hundreds of submissions, your photograph needs to communicate something quickly. Not necessarily a particular character, but a sense of who you are and what you might bring to a role.
Recent actor casting headshots in Montreal
I’ve recently been photographing a number of actors in my Montreal studio, creating images for film, television and theatre submissions.
One session was with Canadian actress Miku Martineau. We wanted a range of images that could work for different kinds of casting and press articles — from warm and approachable to something a little bolder and more dramatic.
About the session
My studio is in Villeray, a short walk from Jean-Talon metro. I like working in the studio for actor headshots because we can keep things simple and concentrate on the person in front of the camera. We can easily change the lighting, background, wardrobe and direction without having to worry about what the location is doing.
I usually recommend bringing more clothing options than you think you'll need. That way, we can try things against the different backgrounds and see what works best. Think about the kinds of roles you're actually submitting for, and bring clothes that fit well and feel like you.
I’d avoid anything that might overpower your face, i.e. very busy patterns, huge logos or anything that doesn't feel like you. And if your agent, manager or casting professional has given you specific direction, bring that along too. It can be really helpful to know what you feel is currently missing from your casting materials.
